Review: SuperO C7Z270-PG Motherboard

The release of Intel’s 7th Gen Core “Kaby Lake” desktop processors recently also sees introduction of the new Z270 chipset to support the new architecture. The new CPUs are still using the existing LGA1150 socket and fully compatible with last-gen Z170 chipset with a simple BIOS update. Good thing is that the new Z270 chipset is also supporting the 6th Gen Core “Skylake” CPUs out of the box.

From a chipset perspective, there is not much difference in terms of features offered between the Z270 and the Z170 chipsets. The new Z270 chipset supports Intel’s Optane (3D XPoint) Technology and comes with a total of 24 PCIe 3.0 lanes versus 20 lanes on the Z170. So there a four extra PCIe lanes on the Z270 chipset that opens the door for more PCIe-based device supports such as ultra-fast M.2 NVMe SSDs and so on. Similarity wise, both 100- and 200-series support a total of 10 USB 3.0 ports and 14 USB 2.0 ports.

This year ahead of the official launch date, we are glad to be given the opportunity to do some preliminary testing on two Z270 boards from SuperMicro – C7Z270-CG and C7Z270-PG. For starters, SuperMicro is not a new name when it comes to server-grade products such as the SuperBlade servers, SuperRack server cabinet, workstation motherboards, storage solutions, networking solutions, and power supplies. SuperO is SuperMicro’s gaming series of motherboards with at least five models launched for the latest Intel 200-Series chipset alone.

Speaking of the C7Z270-CG, it is specially designed for high-performance personal computing while the flagship C7Z270-PG, which we are going to take a look today, is the most feature-rich model that provides a premium gaming experience. Is the Pro Gaming series the motherboard that you have been looking for? Let’s find out now…

Being the flagship Z270 motherboard in SuperO’s lineup, the C7Z270-PG is loaded with a huge amount of features. Based on the LGA1151 socket, it supports not only Intel’s 7th Gen “Kaby Lake” desktop CPUs but also the 6th Gen Core “Skylake” processors. The board sports four DIMM slots support up 64Gb of unbuffered, non-ECC, 3,733 MHz DDR4 memory with overclocking. It also supports Intel Extreme Memory Profile (XMP) to ensure problem-free when it comes to memory issues.

Connectivity are plentiful, the motherboard comes equipped with an Avago PEX8747 bridge chip to expand the PCIe lanes so that you can have multiple devices connected simultaneously. You get total of six SATA 6Gb/s ports, four 10Gb/s USB 3.1 connectors (three Type-A plus one Type-C), four USB 3.0 ports, six USB 2.0 ports, a pair of M.2 and next-gen U.2 connectors running off PCIe 3.0 x4 lane for a blazing-fast 32Gb/s data transferring speed. At the rear I/O panel, you will find three types of internal graphics output which are HDMI 2.0, DisplayPort 1.2 and DVI-D ports.

In terms of PCIe expansion slots, you get four full-length PCIe 3.0 x16 slots and one single PCIe 3.0 x4 slot. You can run x16 lanes for single card solution, x16/x16 for 2-way, x16/x8/x8 for 3-way, or x8/x8/x8/x8 for 4-way in multi-GPU configurations. SuperMicro’s representative has confirmed that the board will support both NVIDIA’s 4-way SLI and AMD’s 4-way CrossFireX technologies.

To achieve the best gaming experience, SuperMicro provides RealTek’s ALC 1150 audio solution that delivers a crystal-clear and immersive sound quality. As far as the networking solution is concerned, SuperMicro gives you not just one, but two high-end Intel’s Gigabit LAN Ethernet ports which is useful in the workplace where you can use these to connect a PC to a private network then the other one for a VPN connection to allow a third party service engineer to perform a remote control and repair the machine in the event of system failure.

Conforming to ATX form factor, the C7Z270-PG measures 30.5 cm in length and 24.4 cm in width. It will definitely fit well in most standard ATX chassis in the market.
