Back in March when NVIDIA introduced the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti graphics card it has also announced refreshed GeForce GTX 1060 and GTX 1080 models with faster GDDR5 graphics memory of 9Gbps and 11Gbps, respectively. This results in better frame rates, quicker asset and texture loading times, bringing gaming performance to the next level.
Specifically, the GeForce GTX 1060 9Gbps is NVIDIA’s answer to the Radeon RX 580 from AMD, while extending the GeForce GTX 1080 11Gbps to a wider gap without any direct competition from the Red Team, at least for now. Recently we’ve also heard some rumours saying that the upcoming Radeon RX Vega will be slightly faster than the old GeForce GTX 1080 model with 10Gbps, so the refreshed model with 11Gbps VRAM is likely another preparation from NVIDIA to counter the possible threat from its competitor.
With us today is the AORUS GeForce GTX 1060 6GB 9Gbps from GIGABYTE. We will be discussing about the performance of the graphics card in synthetic and gaming benchmarks, thermal performance, power consumption, and its overclocking potential. In addition, to give you an idea of where would the card’s performance sit, we will also be comparing it against the Strix GeForce GTX 980 4GB OC Edition as well as two custom GeForce GTX 1080 Ti cards. Out of the box the AORUS GeForce GTX 1060 is a pre-overclocked graphics card that is powered by NVIDIA’s GP106 graphics processor based around Pascal GPU architecture. Featuring a total of 1,280 CUDA cores, it also boasts 48 ROPs, 80 TMUs, and 192-bit memory interface with 6GB of GDDR5 graphics memory running at 9026 MHz effective clock.
GIGABYTE supplied their self-developed AORUS Graphics Engine software in the box, which allows users to choose the desired performance profile in a selection of four modes – Silent Mode, Gaming Mode, OC Mode, and User Mode. Each mode will give you different GPU clock speed profile while maintaining the GDDR5 graphics memory at 9026 MHz.
Silent Mode is very suitable for gamers who are looking for an ultra-silent gaming rig without compromising the thermal performance. In this mode, the GPU is operating at 1,734 MHz boost clock.
In Gaming Mode, the GPU receives a higher GPU boost clock speed of 1,835 MHz. Right out of the box, our sample unit comes with this mode, offering the perfect balance between gaming performance, thermal performance, and acoustic performance.
OC Mode provides the most aggressive clock speed profile, with the GPU receiving a boost clock speed of 1,860 MHz. As the GIGABYTE has validated the AORUS card to be operating stably at such clock speed, we have decided to use this mode throughout our benchmarking tests to demonstrate the best performance out of this graphics card.
User Mode allows users to select and apply the saved profile. This custom profile can be created in the Professional Mode that is accessible through a button located at the bottom right corner of the screen.
